Z Factor Training

Agility Training The Z Factor is simple. First you bond, then you train. Most people get this backwards. They try to bond as they train, or even worse, they attemt to train without any bonding whatsoever. Think about it: if you walked up to a person you had no bond or relationship with, and asked him to fax a paper for you, he'd look at you like you were crazy. Now, picture someone you're bonded with, someone you trust, respect, and have a relationship with. Ask this person to fax your paper and he will. Naturally. Because he wants to. This is the basis behind the Z Factor training. If you're bonded in the correct way with your dog, he'll WANT to listen and behave. All further obendience training starts from here.

It's also important to rmember that you don't build a good relationship by yelling, screaming, or yanking someone's chain. The Z Factor training uses ultra positive methods. Your dog will learn to trust and respect you through play and conceptual learning.

There are three basic games I teach to begin.

  • Hand Feeding
  • Conceptual Massage
  • Play Relationship

These games are very specific, and each game has several parts and concepts within.

All three of these games are very positive and motivational, and help to create eye contact, attention, name recognition, vocabulary, and the very special bond that your dog and you need in order to begin obedience training. I teach several concepts during the bonding phase. The most important ones are, "no", "stay", and "ok", the universal release command. These concepts are a necessary precusor and foundation for any obedience work. These are the most important concepts of all. Vocabulary development also begins in the bonding phase. By the time you get to the training, your dog is focused, he understands that you are his leader, or Benevolent Alpha, and he's ready to work for you, because you've taken the time to listen to him. A bond is a relationship that works for both parties involved. It's not one-sided. You learn to speak dog, as your dog learns to understand English. Bonding and training is about creating a common understanding and language, and it should be incredibly fun for both owner, and dog.

All my knowledge and understanding is built upon the legs of the brilliant trainers who came before me. The following information is the most important in training your dog: Understand the dog's mind and dog psychology. Start by understanding how dogs learn.

Understand reinforcement and schedules of reinforcement. Understan how to create conditioned reinforcers. Understan a primarty vs. secondary/conditioned reinforcer. Understand how to mark correct behaviors with the use clicker. Know how to shape behaviors. Really understand what timing, consistency and motivation mean for your dog. These are only a few of the terms that are absolutely necessary to begin training, and you can learn about them by reading THE Z FACTOR. These methods can be used to train your dog, and enhance your life as well. You will start to get the results you desire, in whatever area of life you'd like.
