I currently live with my 5 rescue dogs in a canyon home in Los Angeles. It's really great to watch the pack relate to each other. They are the greatest teachers of all. I have a Chow-mix, an Australian Shepherd, a Shiba Inu, a Greyhound and a Bichon Frise...and yes, they're all rescues!
Django, my Australian Shepherd does Search and Rescue, agility, and competitive obedience. He can skateboard, surf, and he gets me water from the fridge! (Or a beer, depending on my mood). He also carries my bags and cooler to the car for me. He takes notes back and forth from one person to another in the house. He'll take any one of my dogs on a walk with the leash, or he'll go get them and bring them to me by name. He's truly an amazing dog. He knows well over 100 words, concepts and commands. Currently, I am training him to detect cancer on a human’s breath. He will be a certified cancer detection dog in a few months. He will be one of the 6 cancer detection dogs for the next research study I'm conducting in 2008. His favorite thing to do is work.... an Aussie to the bone.
Eugene is my chow-mix. He's almost 12 years old. He can sneeze on command, and then get a Kleenex. If I sneeze, he goes and gets me a Kleenex, too. He's been on Pet Star, growled at Bin Laden, does yoga and has an entire trick routine. He'll jump over any person or dog. Eugene's favorite activity is to go after rocks that I throw in a lake or any body of water. He still can't figure out why they don't float. He loves running free on the beach.
C.Bean is my Shiba Inu. He is a hunter...always looking for birds, mice, Mr. Squirrel...he lives for them, and the dog park...he loves the beach because he can run free. C. Bean had a hard early life. He had never bonded with a human. When he came to me he knew nothing, and was an escape artist. Now, he can run off leash on hikes, he knows tricks; he is like a different dog. He's bonded, finally. The Bean is my most challenging dog, and he keeps bonding more and more, every day.
Mega Man is my 1-year-old Greyhound.... to see him run makes my heart race. And this is his most favorite thing to do. I take him to the beach, and watch him open up in a straight line. You can't believe your eyes when you watch him run. He jumps waves and swims in the ocean. Most people say Greyhounds can't swim...I beg to differ. He's one of the strongest swimmers I've ever seen, and he LOVES it. He is a PURE joy to watch. He gets all the other dogs to chase him in a giant circle...no one can catch him. He has a perfect "Come" command, and he knows his obedience commands and some tricks, too.
Willis is my Bichon Frise. He loves being around the pack. He has the best nose of ANY dog in the pack. If there's food or a toy hiding...he'll find it. He loves the dog park, playing tug-tug, getting scratches on the belly. He's a big-little dog...he runs with the big guys. If you cross a river, he'll cross right behind you...no questions asked. He's the coolest Bichon in the world because he can seriously keep up with the big guys. In fact, he is the king over the giant Greyhound.
The dogs and I enjoy the beach runs, hiking, and taking long walks together.
